Boredom Reimagined
The Power of Doing Nothing: A Summer Practice
Hello friends!
tl;dr: This summer, embrace boredom as a secret doorway to creativity and presence. Try making your own Boredom Manifesto—a playful reminder of why doing nothing might be the most nourishing thing you do. Reflect on a time when stillness brought you insight, delight, or simply a breath of fresh air.
As summer approaches and our schedules begin to soften, more space appears in our days. There’s a loosening, a sense of pause—and with it, a quiet question arises: How will we fill this time?
We often rush to fill every gap with productivity or entertainment, uneasy with stillness, wary that it might invite restlessness—or worse, loneliness. Even a quick scroll can delay that flicker of emptiness just long enough to keep boredom at bay. After all, boredom can feel uncomfortable, even pointless. But what if these unstructured days—when nothing is planned—aren’t empty at all? What if this space, and the boredom that sometimes surfaces within it, is quietly brimming with possibility?
I think back to teenage summers, when the buzz of activity would finally quiet, and I’d find myself stretched out in the grass, watching clouds drift by and discovering shapes. There was nothing to do and nowhere to be—just sky above, earth below, and time unfolding. It didn’t feel extraordinary then. But looking back, those were the moments when something deeper stirred. I felt the vastness of life—and the hum of endless possibility.
When we stop filling every crack, our minds begin to wander. Curiosity stirs. And the world, once again, feels expansive. With it—often softly—comes creativity, clarity, and wonder.
“There is more to life than increasing its speed.” — Mahatma Gandhi
I dare you to get bored this summer—not just a little, but wonderfully, wildly bored. See what awakens when there’s nothing to chase.
Your Boredom Manifesto Practice
This summer, I invite you to create your own Boredom Manifesto.
Reflect on moments when boredom led to something unexpected or positive.
Write down five ways boredom benefits your life—how it allows you to rest, imagine, listen, reset, or return to yourself.
Keep your manifesto somewhere visible. Let it anchor you when the urge to fill space arises.
In the spirit of honoring boredom and space, I’ll be taking a break from newsletters until August. I’ll still offer a few live Insight Timer meditations on Zoom, but only two more in-person classes remain before we pause until late summer. I’m looking forward to a season of cloud-watching, quiet meandering, and discovering what blooms in the stillness. I can’t wait to share and hear what emerges from all our delightfully “boring” stories when I return.
